자의반 타의반으로 다녔던 피아노학원. 바이엘을 시작으로 체르니 100을 지나 30 그리고 40 중반에 그만뒀다. 한때 피아니스트를 꿈꾸기도 했지만, 콩쿨 한번 나가지 못하고, 피아노 학원이 문을 닫는 바람에 역시나 자의반 타의반으로 그만뒀다. 이사를 할때마다 피아노는 따로 옮겼고, 그때마다 조율도 했었다. 학원은 다니지 않았지만, 여전히 피아노 연습을 했었다.

 

그러나 한살 한살 나이를 먹으면서, 다양한 다른 취미가 생기면서 피아노는 그렇게 자리만 차지하는 인테리어 가구가 됐다. 마지막 이사 후 조율조차 하지 않았던 피아노는 절대음감이 아닌 주인을 만나서 음이탈 상태로 놓여있었다. 음이탈이 음이탈인지 모르고 가끔 딩가딩가하고 있는 주인을 볼때마다 아프다고 했을텐데, 어디가 정확히 아픈 줄도 모르고 그렇게 또 몇 년이 흘렀다.

 

피아노 학원을 다녔고, 가끔 악보를 보면서 연주도 하는데, 여전히 못하는게 있다. 바로 피아노를 치면서 노래를 부르는 것이다. 악보를 보는 것만으로도 벅찼고, 외우고 있는 음악이라 해도 음계를 생각하느라 절대 노래를 부르지 못했다. 재즈 피아노와 코드 반주로 배웠으면 피아노를 치면서 노래를 부를 수 있다고 하는데, 너무 늦게서야 알게 되었다. 이제는 음계도 한참 봐야 할 정도로 엉망이 되어 버렸다. 그래서 피아노를 치면서 노래를 부르는 사람을 볼때마다 참 멋지다는 생각이 든다.

 

 

 

빌리 조엘은 미국 뉴욕 롱 아일랜드에서 태어나 14세 때부터 록 밴드 활동을 했으며, 1971년부터 솔로 가수로 활동하기 시작했다. 1973년 싱글 <Piano Man〉으로 큰 성공을 거둔 그는 1993년 솔로 정규 음반 제작을 그만둘 때까지 많은 히트곡을 발표했다. 빌리 조엘은 전 세계적으로 1억장 이상의 음반 판매고를 올렸으며, RIAA에 따르면 미국에서 6번째로 많은 음반 판매고를 올린 가수이다. 빌리 조엘은 1991년에 그래미 레전드 상(Grammy Legend Award)을 받았으며, 총 6회의 그래미 수상경력을 갖고 있다. 1992년 작곡가 명예의 전당에, 1999년에 로큰롤 명예의 전당에, 2006년에는 롱 아일랜드 음악 명예의 전당에 올랐다. 1993년 버클리 음악 대학에서 명예박사 학위(Hon DMus)를 받았으며, 총 6개의 명예 학위를 보유하고 있다. 피아노를 치면서 노래를 부르는 빌리 조엘(Billy Joel)이 너무 좋다. 특히 피아노맨은 전주에 나오는 경쾌한 피아노와 하모니 소리가 사람을 기분 좋게 만들어 준다. Honesty도 좋아하지만, 빌리 조엘하면 자동적으로 피아노 맨(Piano Man)이 가장 먼저 생각난다. 지난주에 엘튼존과 빌리 조엘이 함께 부른 "Goodbye yellow brick road"를 포스팅했다. 피아노 맨도 혹시 같이 부른 적이 있을까 했는데, 역시 있었다. 혼자 부르는 것도 좋지만, 빌리 조엘과 엘튼존이 같이 부르니 더 좋은 거 같다.
